Eagles’s Sights News reports that a Chief Magistrate Court in Iyaganku, Ibadan, has ordered the remand of three individuals at Agodi Correctional Center over Ibadan Funfair Tragedy

 

The trio includes Mr. Abdullahi Fasasi, principal of Islamic High School in Bashorun Ibadan; Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat, proprietor of Agidigbo FM; and Naomi Silekunola, the estranged wife of the Ooni of Ile Ife, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi.¹

The court’s decision was made on Tuesday by Chief Magistrate Olabisi Ogunkanmi. The three individuals were arrested in connection with a recent stampede at the school, which resulted in the loss of several lives.

According to reports, the trio was brought to court on Tuesday by the Oyo State Police Command amidst heavy security. The court premises were filled with relatives of the defendants and other interested parties.

The defendants were charged with four counts, with the police prosecutor arguing that their actions were contrary to Section 324 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 38, Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State of Nigeria, 2000.

Chief Magistrate Ogunkanmi ordered that the suspects be kept at Agodi Correctional Center pending advice from the state prosecutor. This development comes after the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, took over the investigation of the Ibadan funfair stampede.²

Earlier the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and called for immediate measures to prevent such incidents in the future.³

The principal, proprietor, and ex-queen were accused of negligence and manslaughter in connection with the stampede. The incident has sparked widespread outrage and calls for accountability.

The court’s decision to remand the trio is seen as a step towards ensuring justice for the victims and their families. The case is ongoing, and the suspects will remain in custody pending further developments.
