NYSC Resumes ₦77,000 Arrears After Two-Month Payment Drought, Ex-Corps Member Says It’s Beyond Money
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) on Wednesday resumed the disbursement of arrears, marking its first round of payments since June 3, after a two-month pause.
The arrears are tied to the recently approved ₦77,000 monthly allowance for corps members by the Federal Government.
It will be recalled that on April 5, the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, assured that corps members who had recently concluded their service would not be excluded from the new allowance.
Speaking at the Batch A 2025 Pre-Mobilisation Workshop in Abuja, he said, “Once funds are released to us to offset the arrears, we will pay them. Even our corps members who passed out recently will benefit. We have their bank details.”
He further stressed the Federal Government’s resolve, stating, “Nigerians should not fret about that because the government is both responsible and responsive to their needs.”
According to a recent report gathered by Eagles Sight News, on Punch, a former corps member who requested anonymity expressed surprise at the resumed payments, saying, “After waiting for two months, I didn’t expect to see another payment alert. But honestly, it’s not just about the money; it’s about feeling like our efforts actually count.”
The arrears cover the period between July 2024 and March 2025 and come after months of frustration among corps members over delays in implementing the allowance increase, which was approved as part of government efforts to cushion economic challenges facing Nigerian youths.
