Egbetokun Resignation is Coming 10 Months After Activist Sowore Publicly Called on Him to Step Down

Abuja, Nigeria – The Presidency has confirmed the resignation of Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, from his position as Nigeria’s top police officer.

According to sources within the Presidency, Egbetokun stepped down following discussions with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. Officials clarified that his resignation was voluntary and not a dismissal.

It was gathered that the former IGP cited pressing personal and family-related matters as the major reason for his decision to resign. The Presidency maintained that the move was taken in good faith to allow him focus fully on those concerns.

Meanwhile, the development also comes months after human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, publicly demanded Egbetokun’s resignation. Eagles Sight News recalls.Sowore had argued that the police chief should vacate office after attaining the statutory retirement age of 60, describing his continued stay as unlawful despite amendments to the Police Act permitting a four-year tenure.

Egbetokun was appointed as the 22nd Inspector-General of Police in June 2023. Although he reached the statutory retirement age of 60, an amendment to the Police Act allowed him to complete a single four-year term irrespective of age or years of service, which positioned him to remain in office until 2027.

Despite the legal provision backing his tenure, public discourse continued in some quarters over security challenges across the country during his leadership.

Meanwhile, arrangements are underway for a smooth transition, with a senior police officer expected to be announced as his successor in the coming days.

Further official statements are anticipated as developments unfold.
