SWEGOP Warns Politicians Against Fake News, Calls for State of Emergency on Roads

The South West Guild of Online Publishers (SWEGOP) has urged politicians to shun misinformation and baseless accusations during electioneering, calling on them to prioritise policy discussions and clearly communicate their plans for addressing the needs of the electorate.
The guild, in a statement by its Acting Chairman, Chief Tunde Busari, and Publicity Secretary, Mr Remi Oladoye, said political campaigns should be centred on policies, development plans and solutions to the challenges facing the people rather than attacks on individuals.
SWEGOP urged politicians to demonstrate their capacity to govern by explaining how they intend to address the needs of the electorate, stressing that the spread of misinformation and unsubstantiated allegations could undermine public confidence in the political process.
The organisation called on political actors to embrace responsible communication and constructive engagement capable of promoting peaceful and meaningful democratic participation.
In a related development, the guild called on the government to declare a state of emergency on roads following extensive damage caused by rainfall in several areas.
It expressed concern that many roads had been washed away or rendered impassable, causing hardship for motorists and other road users.
The guild urged the relevant authorities to intervene urgently by rehabilitating damaged roads, improving drainage systems and implementing lasting measures to prevent further deterioration.
SWEGOP stressed that the condition of roads required immediate attention to safeguard lives, facilitate movement and prevent disruptions to commercial and economic activities.
It also called for a coordinated government response to address the worsening road situation and provide lasting solutions to the challenges confronting road users, particularly during the rainy season.
