FG DECLARES FRIDAY PUBLIC HOLIDAY TO MARK 27 YEARS OF DEMOCRATIC GOVERNANCE

The Federal Government has announced Friday as a public holiday in celebration of Nigeria’s 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance.
The declaration was made in a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani.
According to the statement, the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, approved the holiday on behalf of the Federal Government.
Tunji-Ojo reiterated the government’s dedication to upholding democratic principles, the rule of law, transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance across the country.
He also assured Nigerians that the ministry, working alongside relevant security agencies, would continue efforts aimed at enhancing and sustaining internal security nationwide.
The minister emphasized that peace and security remain critical requirements for democratic stability and national progress.
He encouraged citizens to use the occasion as a time for reflection on their civic responsibilities and the nation’s democratic journey.
“As we mark this historic day, every Nigerian is encouraged to remain law-abiding, uphold the institutions that sustain our democracy, and remember that the strength of any democracy lies ultimately in the character of its citizens,” he said.
Tunji-Ojo further described June 12 as a significant date in Nigeria’s history, noting that it serves as a reminder of the courage, resilience, and sacrifices of individuals who contributed to the nation’s democratic development.
“Their legacies continue to inform the values and responsibilities of the Nigerian state,”Tunji-Ojo added.
