The Oyo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) today held a church service to mark the beginning of 2023 NUJ Press Week.

The service, which was held at the Christ Apostolic Church, Eagle’s Wing, Wakajaiye, Ibadan, the state capital, had members of the council in attendance.

In a message titled: “Speaking the Truth”, the presiding minister, Pastor J Akinade, charged worshippers and members of the press to speak the truth in their dealings.

He noted that everybody in the society, including government and the masses, relies on journalists to be informed, saying a nation that is not informed is deformed.

Speaking from the scripture, Exodus 23: 1-8, Pastor Akinade charged journalists to always bring to the consciousness of leaders the reason to do the right things by speaking the truth always.

He said journalists are privileged people who should know the truth and must discharge their duties without fear.

He equally charged members of the union to be fair to the church leadership by seeking to know the truth before reporting negative stories.

Akinade said, “I want to charge you Journalists to be truthful, and be fair to Christian leaders, before you report negative stories about them. May God grant you wisdom from above that will make you rise above tribulations and storms of life”.

He prayed for wisdom and guidance that will make them access helpers that will impact their business and life.

The cleric identified fairness, truthfulness, focus, and covenant practices as ways of getting access to unending mercy from above for journalists.

Speaking at the service, the Chairman of the state council of NUJ, Comrade Demola Babalola, said given challenges of journalism, it was imperative for journalists in Oyo State to thank God for His grace, over the year.

He promised that journalists in the state would continue to discharge their legitimate duties without fear or favour.
