Nigerian Group Completes 431-Hour Reading Marathon in Guinness World Record Attempt
A team of five Nigerian readers, organized by Naija ReadFest, has completed an extraordinary 431-hour, 31-minute reading marathon, aiming to break the Guinness World Record for the longest continuous reading aloud by a group. Eagles Sight News has gathered.
The intensive event, held in Lagos, spanned over 18 days and featured readings from 79 books by Nigerian authors. The marathon sought to promote literacy and celebrate local literature, particularly amid ongoing challenges such as a reported national literacy rate of just over 60%.
“We did this to celebrate Nigerian literature,” said Kingsley Sintim, spokesperson for Naija ReadFest. Organizers have submitted documentation to Guinness for record verification. (AP News)
Readers involved shared how difficult the night shifts were, but said their perseverance was driven by a desire to champion inclusive education and draw attention to the country’s educational deficiencies.
