Abuja, Nigeria – President Bola Tinubu has brushed off a viral video showing him slipping while boarding a presidential parade vehicle at Eagle Square in Abuja, jokingly referring to the incident as “swagger”.

Speaking at the Democracy Day banquet on Wednesday night, Tinubu addressed the mishap, saying: “Early this morning, I had a swagger, and it’s on social media. They were confused about whether I was doing Buga or Babariga, but it is a day to celebrate democracy while doing ‘Idobale’ (a Yoruba word meaning prostration) for the day.”

The President, who is from the Yoruba ethnic group, added: “I am a traditionally Yoruba boy, and I did my Idobale.”

The incident occurred earlier in the day when Tinubu lost his footing momentarily while attempting to board the parade vehicle. However, he was quickly assisted by his aides and continued with his duties at the ceremony.

Despite concerns expressed by netizens on social media, the President appears to have taken the incident in stride, using humor to deflect any potential embarrassment.

The Democracy Day celebration was held to commemorate Nigeria’s transition to democratic rule in 1999.
