Nigeria’s political landscape may be heading for a dramatic shake-up ahead of the 2027 general election, following a strategic agreement among key opposition figures to rally behind one presidential candidate.

Eagles Sight News reports that the decision emerged from a crucial gathering in Ibadan, where prominent leaders across opposition circles convened to deliberate on the future of the country’s democratic direction. The meeting, held under the theme “That We May Work Together for a United Opposition to Sustain Our Democracy”, signaled a clear shift toward collaboration over competition.

Among those present were former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Speaker of the House of Representatives Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola.

Following extensive discussions, the leaders reached a consensus to put aside individual ambitions and longstanding differences, opting instead for a unified approach aimed at challenging the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the next presidential election.

The summit attracted a wide range of stakeholders in governance and public policy, all underscoring the importance of unity, electoral credibility, and democratic stability as guiding principles for the proposed coalition.

Analysts believe the outcome of the Ibadan meeting could mark the early stages of a powerful political alliance, one capable of reshaping voter dynamics and intensifying the contest for Nigeria’s top office in 2027.
