Born on July 17, 1947, in Mexico City, Mexico, Abraham Laboriel Sr. is a 78-year-old Mexican-American bassist whose musical influence spans gospel, jazz, pop, and film soundtracks. He currently resides in Los Angeles, California, where he continues to inspire musicians worldwide.
Laboriel pursued formal music training at the Berklee College of Music, graduating in 1972 with a degree in composition. His virtuosity on the bass, including innovative use of the 8-string bass, has made him one of the most sought-after session musicians in the world.
He is celebrated for his collaborations with gospel legends like Ron Kenoly, performing unforgettable bass solos in songs such as “Ancient of Days” (Lift Him Up, 1992) and “Give to the Lord” (Sing Out With One Voice, 1995). Beyond gospel, he has contributed to over 4,000 recordings alongside music icons including Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson, Madonna, and Stevie Wonder.
Abraham comes from a musical family, with siblings like Johnny Laboriel (Mexican rock singer) and Ella Laboriel (singer/actress). He is also the father of accomplished musicians, including Abe Laboriel Jr. (drummer) and Mateo Laboriel (producer/composer).
Laboriel’s technical mastery, soulful expression, and expansive musical collaborations have earned him global recognition. In 2005, he was honored with an Honorary Doctorate of Music by Berklee College of Music, further cementing his legacy as one of the most influential bassists of all time.
