Breaking:Court of Appeal Upholds PDP Convention Ruling, Dismisses Turaki Faction, Orders ₦2M Cost

Abuja, Nigeria — Monday, March 9, 2026

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has upheld the earlier ruling of the Federal High Court that halted the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) National Convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State in November 2025. The court also dismissed the appeal by the faction led by Mr. Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), which sought to validate the outcomes of the convention, and awarded **₦2 million against the appellants** as cost of the suit.
The Ibadan convention, which purportedly produced Turaki as National Chairman along with other national officers, had faced legal challenges on the grounds that the party did not comply with its constitution and relevant electoral regulations before conducting the exercise.
During proceedings, Turaki’s faction argued that the Federal High Court’s decision was unjust and lacked jurisdiction, but the Appeal Court found their arguments unmeritorious, thereby upholding the suspension of the convention and ordering the payment of **₦2 million as legal costs** against the appellants.
Commenting on the judgment, the PDP Governors’ Forum called for calm among party members and urged all stakeholders to respect the judicial process. The forum emphasized that the ruling should not affect Nigerians’ desire for a fair, transparent, and competitive political system.
Political analysts suggest that the ruling may lead to intense negotiations within the party, as both factions prepare for the 2027 general elections. Party leaders are expected to meet in the coming days to review the judgment and discuss reconciliation strategies.
This development comes at a critical moment for the PDP, highlighting the need for unity and adherence to legal frameworks ahead of Nigeria’s next electoral cycle.
