The Falconets on Saturday lit up Ibadan with a commanding 4-0 victory over Rwanda’s She-Amavubi in the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers, a performance that thrilled fans and reinforced Nigeria’s dominance on the continental stage. 4-0 victory over Rwanda’s She-Amavubi in the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers.

Following the victory of the falconets,  Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde has  expressed his administration’s readiness to provide the necessary infrastructure and support to host a Super Eagles match at the Lekan Salami Stadium. Eagles Sight News reports

The development underscores his commitment to sports growth in the state and to providing a world-class platform for Nigerian footballers to shine. The Falconets’ emphatic win and the governor’s pledge are expected to further boost the morale of football fans in Oyo and beyond.

The Nigerian side displayed fantastic football artistry and dominated the game from start to finish. Precious Oscar put the hosts ahead in the 15th minute, sparking wild jubilation among fans who thronged the stadium to watch the national female team live. Five minutes later, Fatimoh Adesina doubled the lead with a brilliant conversion from a corner kick.

Janet Akekoromowei consolidated the lead in the 64th minute, firing a powerful strike from the edge of the box into Rwanda’s net. The visitors almost pulled one back in the 79th minute, but Falconets’ goalkeeper, Christiana Uzoma, produced a fine save to frustrate their efforts. Taiwo Afolabi then sealed the victory at regulation time with Nigeria’s fourth goal, completing what turned into a goal-filled evening for the Falconets.

Speaking at a post-match news conference, Falconets Head Coach, Moses Aduku, praised his team’s performance and resilience while commending the fighting spirit of the visitors. He revealed that the Falconets’ technical crew had carefully reviewed the first-leg game in Kigali and made vital adjustments, especially in finishing, which paid off handsomely.

She-Amavubi Head Coach, Andre Cassa-Mbungo, admitted that his side lost to a superior team. He explained that most of his players were still young and would need up to three years of development before Rwanda could begin to see their full potential.

The victory ensured Nigeria’s qualification to the next round on a 5-0 aggregate score, following a 1-0 away win in Kigali. The Falconets will now face the winner of the tie between Senegal and Algeria in the third and final round of the qualifiers.

Also reacting, the Oyo State Commissioner for Sports, Hon. Wasilat Adegoke, expressed gratitude to Governor Makinde for his unwavering support and commitment to sports development. She lauded his investment in infrastructure, which has significantly boosted sporting activities in the state.

The commissioner further appreciated the executives of FIFA, CAF, and NFF for their contributions to football growth in Nigeria and Oyo State in particular, stressing that their support has been instrumental in advancing sports in the region.

The 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup will be the 12th edition of the tournament and is scheduled to be hosted by Poland.
