The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) yesterday confirmed that 16 persons died while 83 others sustained injuries when a truck conveying supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) crashed near Panyam, Mangu Local Government Area of Jos, Plateau State.

This reliable online newspaper’Eagle’s Sight News’ has gathered that 16 PDP supporters have lost their lives while 83 others severely injured as a result of what the Federal Road Safety Commission of Nigeria (FRSC) claimed to be excessive speed and overloading .
Eagle’s Sight News understands via a report gathered from The Nationnews in a statement by the Route Commander/Public Enlightenment Officer, Peter Longsan, reads: “A fatal accident happened on January 14, on the Pankshin/Jos Road, about 5pm.
“It was a lone crash involving a truck conveying people from a Plateau Central political campaign rally of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The number of people involved was 99 – 16 persons died and 83 others sustained injuries. The injured were taken to hospitals in Panyam and Mangu town, both in Mangu council, while the bodies were deposited at Mangu General Hospital, Panyam General Hospital, and Nissi Private Hospital.
“The accident was the result of excessive speed and overloading, which caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
“The FRSC advises motorists to use vehicles strictly for the purpose they were made for, maintain safe speed, install speed limits and ensure proper maintenance of their vehicles.”
Governor Simon Lalong, while commiserating with the bereaved families, described the tragedy as a huge loss to the state.
He also sympathised with the PDP family and prayed God to grant eternal rest to the dead, and quick recovery to the injured.
The governor also appealed for caution among motorists and party supporters during the electioneering period where vehicular movement is heightened across the country.
Lalong, in a statement by his spokesman Makut Macham, urged motorists to put safety first and observe road safety regulations.
Governorship candidates of the PDP Celeb Mutfwang, and of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Nantewa Yalwtida, have suspended their campaign activities to honour the deceased.
A statement by Yiljap Abraham, director of Media and Publicity of the Atiku-Okowa/Mutfwang-Piyo Campaign Council, reads: “In further demonstration of his grief and as a mark of honour to PDP members who were involved in a accident on Saturday, the PDP governorship candidate, Caleb Mutfwang, has suspended all campaign activities with immediate effect.
“The candidate has also asked that intense prayers be offered for divine comfort for families and individuals who are bereaved and healing of the injured. The dead will ever remain fresh in the memories of party members and admirers as they are lifted up as heroes of democracy.”
Also spokesman of the Generation Next Campaign Council of the APC, Shittu Bamaiyi, said the governorship candidate, Nantewa Yalwtida, has canceled the campaign tour for three days to honour the deceased.
Bamaiyi said the suspension became necessary to allow him and members of his party join the PDP to mourn the victims.
Nentawe, in company of members his campaign council, also visited victims at the Jos University Teaching hospital. He was taken round the wards by Dr. Peter Onumiyan, and wished them a quick recovery. He also sympathised with bereaved families and prayed against a recurrence.
